A word from MAX RedlineFriday, March 10, 2006The kid.![]() Yep, call me nuts. This kid's 20 years younger than I am. So I'm older and craftier than he is. Yet he got me involved in something I've never been involved in before: Politics. I've always considered politics from its quintessential Latin roots: poly, as in "many", and "ticks" - as in blood-sucking parasites. A college education can be a wonderful thing, especially if you're as cynical as I am. Oh, sure, there was a time back in the 1960's when I entertained the idea of combining pot and politics to form a sort of grass-roots potlitical movement, but nobody'd get off their duffs and quit eating Twinkies. Clearly, it was an idea whose time never arrived. So I just gave up on the whole concept of politics. It was obviously just a bad conglomeration of ticks and snakes; best just to ignore it all as much as possible. Oh sure, I'd vote. But for what? It's always been like walking into an autopsy suite: you smear some vaseline under your nose so the stench doesn't knock you immediately out. Ignore the Stryker saws and the bone dust, cast your ballot in favor of the least bad option, then run like hell. And after years of the drill, you get used to it. Then one day, in rides Jason. Great. Another politician. Nice bicycle, there, kid. And then he starts to chat. "What if..." Yeah, well stuff it right there, Mr. long and lanky. In case you haven't noticed, DMV is giving away drivers' licences to illegal aliens. "I could stop that on day one. Any governor could. I'm just willing to step up to the plate and do it." Huh? Let's see. The guy's running for office and he understands that there are things that a governor can do without running afoul of federal rules that could positively impact the rest of us. How weird is that? It ain't likely. I roll my eyes. He catches it and runs. Then he tells me that he wants to serve as governor, because he believes that through service, he can improve things for everyone - including himself in the "everyone" group. He goes on, but I'm thinking, "he didn't say he wanted to be governor; he said he wanted to serve as governor." Now that's strange. Saxton has said he wants to be governor, but has never mentioned the word "serve". I believe that words mean things, and so I believe Ron when he says that he wants to be governor. To me, that's an entirely different thing from Jason's stated desire to serve as governor. Politics has suddenly become interesting - and relevant. |
